Nelson Fine Arts Plaza design and public art
The design of the Nelson Fine Arts Plaza is inspired by the poetry of Garcia Lorca which describes the desert dualities of "sol y sombra." The architect of the buildings plays with sun and shadow, created by zones of lacy shade and journeys to the sky via terraces and balconies. The Southwest Pieta, by New Mexican sculptor Luiz Jimenez, is made out of fiberglass. He chose this material as it is used for making the car bodies of lowriders. The sculpture depicts the legend of Mexica warrior Popocatepetl and Ixtaccihuatl, the Aztec emperor's daughter.
