MEChA Mural
The mural on the second floor of the Memorial Union originally adorned the wall of the MEChA student office in the 1970s. The mural was spared damage from a 2007 fire in the building, but was slated to be destroyed in subsequent renovations. After many negotiations, the mural was saved. Today’s political leaders, educators, writers, entrepreneurs, attorneys, law enforcement personnel, social workers, and school administrators painted the mural when they were ASU students. After the fire, MEChA moved their office to the first floor of the MU and began working on a new mural. The mural took two years to complete and focuses on the themes of indigenous roots, colonialism, identity loss, political awakening and activism. It was created by artists Julius Badoni and Xochitl Enrique and painted by MEChA students.
