With 42 majors and 67 minors to choose from, the College of Arts and Sciences gives you the flexibility to shape your education how you want it. African American Studies
You will be exposed to exciting and rigorous coursework and develop an understanding of race and the African American experience, as well as the dynamics of the African diaspora. You also will be able to develop service-learning experience by applying your knowledge in local civic organizations, public agencies, churches and institutes of research. Anthropology
The Anthropology Department offers a general program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree and a Research Track/Intensive Major leading to a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Anthropology and a Medical Anthropology Minor. Anthropology is a social science concerned with the study of humans within a broad context that includes the social and physical development of our species. Cyber Intelligence
Cyber Intelligence expands the cyber world beyond code and technology. Our degree prepares you to master all sides of cybersecurity challenges — political, psychological, and global. A degree in cyber intelligence prepares you for a career defending the security of personal privacy, government and military operations, and corporate data, with a well-rounded education that champions critical thinking and problem solving. Economics
While economics does involve a lot of math and statistics, it's ultimately a social science that helps us understand how society uses resources, addressing challenges in areas such as politics, education, the environment and health care. Global Studies
In an increasingly interconnected world, you need a global perspective on pressing issues. A degree in Global Studies instills a critical, global outlook that prepares you to engage with pressing global questions and to thrive in a global economy. The Global Studies major gives you flexible options to study the global issues and regions that interest you the most. History
Studying history gives you a window to the world. It makes you a critical thinker, gives you a well-informed lens for current events, and helps you understand other cultures on a deep level. International Studies
The B.A. in international studies emphasizes the interdisciplinary pursuit of comparative and/or international politics, allowing students to tailor their programs of study to focus on such topics as foreign policy, global economic or environmental studies, or international conflict and cooperation. Political Science
Students obtaining the B.A. in political science receive broad exposure to the discipline, selecting courses from fields such as American politics, comparative politics, international relations, public administration and policy, and political theory, while also developing one or two individualized areas of interest. Chinese Studies
Did you know Chinese is one of the world’s most important languages? Over one billion people, or fifteen percent of the world’s population, speak Chinese as a native language. You can join them. Nearly 20 percent of the world’s population speaks Chinese, and its cultural traditions stretch thousands of years. Chinese studies students will have a chance to learn from professors whose interests range from Tang Dynasty poetry to Qing Dynasty trade routes, Taiwanese pop music and contemporary Chinese cinema. Classics
The Classics Program offers three different concentrations: Ancient Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies. Minors are offered in Greek, Latin, or Classical Studies. The program offers a variety of courses in Greek (GREK) and Latin (LATN) as well as courses in translation (CLAS). Additional courses offered in archeology, art history, comparative literature, ancient history, philosophy, and religious studies supplement and enhance the study of the literatures and languages of the ancient world. Comparative Literature
Once you have a foundation in comparative literature, we encourage you to begin developing your own degree path and research agenda. This freedom allows you to explore exciting and innovative ways to study language, literature, art and culture in a way that speaks to your own passions and interests. Francophone Studies
Welcome to Francophone Studies at the University of South Carolina, where you can study the language, literatures and cultures of France and the Francophone world, leading to both undergraduate and graduate degrees in French. Whether preparing a major or a minor, or simply interested in improving your French, you can choose from a broad range of dynamic, innovative courses to acquire basic and advanced skills and knowledge. You can, for example, learn French collaboratively with students in France, act in a French play, debate the latest French on-line news, review recent films from Africa, explore current trends in French advertising or graphic novels, put together a French CV or even (finally) master that French “R.” Learn more about the French major.
German
Do you want to understand poets like Goethe and Walther von der Vogelweide, thinkers like Kant and Nietzsche and composers like Bach and Beethoven? Do you think it's important to understand political leaders like Barbarossa and Bismarck, scientists like Leibniz and Grimm, and theologians like Meister Eckhart and Martin Luther? Or do you think it's important to understand an increasingly important language in world economics and politics? An undergraduate major or minor in German will give you a head start on the future. In the twenty-first century, unified Germany has become the economic and political leader of the European Union. It is also one of the main partners of the United States in an increasingly internationalized world. Right here in South Carolina, there are over 120 German companies. Aside from preparing you for a career as teacher, translator, or college professor, a BA in German can help prepare you for careers in international business, international law, the Foreign Service, and hospitality and tourism. Russian
The Russian Program at the University of South Carolina immerses students in the study of Russian culture, language, and literature. Students studying Russian at USC have been attracted to the program by innovative classes, award-winning teaching, and individual attention; committed faculty dedicated to the success of their students; and engaged and motivated fellow classmates. Spanish
The Spanish Program at UofSC is the largest in South Carolina. It offers a wide variety of courses for undergraduate and graduate students.
