👚 Student-led Sustainability Initiatives
PopThrift is a small business started by GW students that sources quality, second-hand clothes from college campuses and resells them at affordable prices. The student founders were able to combine their interests in business and sustainability, resulting in a passion project that diverted more than 2,000 pounds of materials from landfills in 2022.
🥤❌ Divest Movement
In 2020, GW committed to eliminating new investments in businesses that derive the majority of their revenues from the extraction of fossil fuel and fully divesting the university endowment from fossil fuel related companies by 2025.
GW is committed to eliminating single-use plastics from campus, and has made the following changes:
- Installation of at least one bottle-filling station (aka “hydration station”) in each building and in convenient pedestrian outdoor locations. All will be easily identified with branding for the initiative.
- All vending machines have been converted from plastic bottled beverages to canned or glass beverages, which can be recycled indefinitely.
