Hutchins Library is home to an extensive collection of materials and also includes Writing Resources, Group and Single study rooms, Special Collections, the Reference Desk, and hosts multiple events and programs throughout the year. One end of the Library also houses Information Systems & Services - which helps students receive and maintain their College-given Dell laptops.
📘Along with holding 300,000 volumes of books, Hutchins Library offers several programs and resources to assist students with their studies.
📘Students can check out books, magazines, dvds, articles, and student made ‘Zines’ by using their Student IDs.
📘Like a public library, students who do not return items on time can receive a small late fee—normally less than $2. Students are actually encouraged to pay these fees with canned goods. This is normally cheaper than the fee itself and the library is able to donate this to local food banks.
📘Professional and student librarians are available to assist students with research at the Reference desk.
📘There are iMacs and Microsoft desktops located in the back of the library. These are downloaded with different programs and software that can allow students to edit videos, audio, photos, and presentations
📘The library also offers cultural enrichment events. Recently they displayed artifacts from the first ladies of Berea, Native American photography, Appalachian feminist art, Latinx traditions.
📘Students also have the availability to check out private study rooms! These are quieter spaces designated for students to engage in practice presentations, group study, or distraction-free homework sessions. Many of these rooms come equipped with technology and comfortable chairs.
📝Writing Resources:
Writing Resources is a campus center where students, faculty, and staff can receive help with their writing process at any stage! They are trained to assist Berea students in writing as well as all other forms of communication. Consultants must complete a quarter-credit course during their first semester and complete ongoing training throughout their time with Writing Resources.
💻Information Systems and Support Office:
Professional Staff and students provide tech help, training, and support. They update and maintain our internet connection and email privacy.
💻IS&S provides students with a dropbox where students can back up virtually all of their files. This is so we can securely save our papers and documents without the fear of losing them if our computers break or crash.
💻IS&S is over our Laptop program, as all incoming Berea students will receive the latest model of the Dell Latitude laptop for FREE. Throughout their time here they will receive free support for their laptop and upon graduation, they get to keep it.
