First Year Research Immersion Program (FRI)

If you’re interested in a career in STEM, you should know that Binghamton offers the First-year Research Immersion (FRI) program that is the only one of its kind in the Northeast and just one of four in the country!

The First-year Research Immersion (FRI) program provides first-year students with a three semester authentic research experience in sciences and engineering. Working alongside faculty and fellow students on cutting-edge research projects in their early college years, participants in the FRI program tackle weighty world issues, build powerful relationships, and set a course for college and career success.

Nine of the Research Streams are available to students admitted to the Harpur College of Arts and Science including Biogeochemistry, Ecological Genetics, and Environmental Visualization with Drones. Two of the research streams are available to students admitted to Watson College of Engineering: Clean Energy and Image & Acoustic Signals Analysis.

The Source Project

Binghamton research opportunities aren’t limited to just the hard sciences. The Source Project is for students interested in the liberal arts who also want to produce original research and make a positive impact on the world.

The Source Project is a sequence of two, four-credit courses in fall and spring semesters that we call research streams, where first-year students have the opportunity to discover sources, and from them, gain new knowledge about the messy and ever-changing world we inhabit. Students will ask questions and seek answers, guided by experienced faculty who engage in these practices as their profession. Students will produce original projects that express their findings and learn how to communicate and disseminate the relevance of what they have found with classmates as well as others outside of the classroom. Research streams include "Pandemic!", History and Capitalism, The Social Context of Learning and more!

Research at Binghamton

We’re proud to offer our students an opportunity to participate in research from day one working alongside award-winning faculty. Take distinguished professor of chemistry and material science and 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner, M. Stanley Whittingham, for example! He’s responsible for developing the lithium-ion battery that powers your phone and computer!

Greenhouse

For those interested in understanding plant species and their ecologies, our 12,500 square foot greenhouse facility is made up of more than 6,000 exotic plants, representing over 1,200 distinct species. The plants are divided into four simulated environments - tropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and desert. Go take a walk around and see what you can find!
