Johnson Park: A Historic and Cultural Landmark

Johnson Park is one of the most recognizable green spaces on Rutgers University–Camden’s campus, blending historic architecture with modern academic spaces. Originally known as Cooper Park, the area was home to the Cooper Branch Library, which fell into disrepair in the early 20th century. Eldridge R. Johnson, founder of the Victor Talking Machine Company, funded a new library in 1918, and in appreciation, the park was renamed Eldridge R. Johnson Park in 1920.

The Cooper Library, now a centerpiece of the park, features a striking mosaic frieze, America Receiving the Gifts of Nations, created by D'Ascenzo Studios in Philadelphia. While the library no longer operates as a public institution, it remains a historic landmark on campus.
