St. Mary’s Catholic Church was built in 1903 and is one of the oldest standing structures in the region. Members of the Mexican American community of San Pablo built the brick church to replace their adobe church. The original adobe church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, was at the base of what is now known as “A” Mountain. Mexican American families settled the area at the foot of ”A” Mountain around 1872. The barrio of San Pablo flourished there until the1950s, when ASU began to expand and displaced it. It was bordered by Fifth Street, University Drive, College Avenue and the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. The San Pablo dorms are named in memory of this community.
The church is home to ASU's All Saints Catholic Newman Center and Mary College at ASU.
The University of Mary has partnered with Arizona State University to create Mary College at ASU, a domestic exchange program where Mary College students have the opportunity to belong to a community of learners committed to developing their minds and fostering their faith through the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. Mary College members enrolled at ASU can access Catholic studies courses taught by the University of Mary faculty and fulfill ASU general course requirements. Students from the University of Mary can spend a semester in Arizona as exchange students and access ASU courses and all the opportunities and resources of a research-one university.
