The East Mall provides access to a number of colleges and schools, including the Jackson School of Geosciences, which offers the nation's #2 geology program, the College of Fine Arts, dedicated to the study of visual arts, music, theatre, dance and design, and the College of Liberal Arts, home of the Plan II honors program, ranked as one of the top honors experiences in the country. Robert Patton Hall is home to UT's ROTC program, the Mood Disorders Lab, the Population Research Center and the Urban Ethnography Lab.

The second Martin Luther King, Jr. statue erected on a college campus, this likeness was the result of a student initiative to diversify the statuary at UT. It was unveiled in 1999 and was the first of three campus statues created to honor civil rights leaders.
